Archival Research

If a structure is already known to have architectural and/or historical significance, archival research provides a solid foundation for making critical preservation and restoration decisions. However, many restoration teams simply don’t have time or the staff resources to devote to detailed research. Our consultants are experienced in the use of archival sources to identify available documentation, such as historic photographs, articles, and architectural specifications and drawings, to identify the building’s original features as well as any subsequent alterations.  We will also trace the building’s provenance to identify the potential significance of the structure’s association with past owners and occupants.

When Should You Incorporate Archival Research Into Your Project?

•An individual historic resource is under consideration for either national, state, or local landmark status, but the historic significance has not been properly documented.

•The restoration team needs additional information to authoritatively determine a period of significance and/or identify historically significant building elements.

•There have been multiple alterations to the building and historic documentation is necessary to identify missing features.

•A historic building is being marketed to potential tenants and purchasers or is the subject of a fundraising campaign.
