Historic Resources Surveys
A historic resources survey is a building block of sound historic preservation practice, but many architecture firms don’t have the staff to devote to the process. Our consultants will support you as much or as little as you need throughout this important project phase: from developing survey forms for your staff to use to conducting a survey and analyzing results, we will customize our services to reflect your project and you’re the level of assistance you require.
When Should You Incorporate a Historic Resource Survey Into Your Project?
Surveys are valuable decision-making tools whenever the historic significance and/or the integrity of the historic resources are unconfirmed. Surveys are recommended when:
•There are repetitive elements of an individual structure are in varying conditions that need to be evaluated before a rehabilitation plan can be developed. A reconnaissance survey is used to evaluate physical conditions using a standard set of criteria, and the resulting data facilitates repair and/or replacement choices.
•A community is being considered for historic district nomination. A reconnaissance survey is used to assess the historic integrity and the cohesiveness of the district.
•The revitalization of individual structures within a larger complex of buildings, such as a manufacturing complex or farm, must be prioritized. An intensive resource survey is a useful tool for prioritizing work based on the physical condition of the structures, the historic significance of the individual structures, and available resources.
